Mashed potatoes were a staple in our house growing up—it was the one side dish my mom knew we’d all love. For a boost in nutrition, try swapping out white potatoes for sweet potatoes. You’ll love this Savory Sweet Potato Mash, made even creamier with a touch of Greek yogurt!
Why I Love This Recipe
Sweet potatoes are such a great veggie choice. Mashing them up and mixing in creamy elements and herbs elevate this side dish. These aren’t your auntie’s sweet potatoes with added sugar and marshmallows. The natural sweetness of the potato is balanced out with earthy flavors from turmeric and fresh herbs creating a fantastic side dish for just about any meal.

Savory Sweet Potato Ingredients
Sweet Potatoes
These babies are loaded with good stuff for our bodies. According to the article, 6 Surprising Health Benefits of Sweet Potatoes at Healthline.com: “Sweet potatoes are high in fiber and antioxidants, which protect your body from free radical damage and promote a healthy gut and brain.”
They get their vibrant orange color from beta carotene, which our bodies convert into immune-boosting vitamin A. Plus, complex carbs are essential, and this recipe is a delicious way to get your fill.
In this recipe those sweet potatoes are mixed with savory ingredients, but if you are looking for a sweeter sweet potato dish; try my Sweet Potato Crisp recipe. It’s a delight for dessert of side dish.

Greek Yogurt
Packed with protein, plain Greek yogurt is an excellent way to make dishes creamier. I like to get the 2% Fage, but 5% would be delightful too.
If you are more of a sour cream fan over Greek yogurt, swap it out in this recipe.
Butter
Get that rich taste with a few tablespoons of butter.
Herbs & Spices
The 3 herbs and spices in this sweet potato dish are:
- Garlic
- Chives
- Turmeric
This combo of flavors goes well with the sweetness of the sweet potatoes. Parsley is a good swap if you aren’t a fan of chives.
How to Make
Sweet potato mash is just like making regular mashed potatoes, but without the added liquid. Here is how to make this savory side dish:
- Rinse, peel, and cut sweet potatoes into 2″to 3″ pieces, making sure they are relatively even.
- Boil in salted water until fork tender.
- Drain well, put back into pot with butter, Greek yogurt, herbs and spices.
- Mash with potato masher until all lumps are mashed and enjoy!
Other Ways to Mash Potatoes
A potato masher is a great tool to mash potatoes. However, what if you don’t have one? Don’t fret, you can still make this tasty recipe with other tools in your kitchen.
- Fork & Whisk– a trusty fork will do the job. Break down the big chunks and use a whisk to smooth out the rest.
- Baking Rack– using a crosshatch cookie cooling rack, press the potatoes through with your hand. Fold in extra ingredients.
- Food Processor– may have to work in batches, but it gets the job done.
- Ricer– using this tool makes great mashies. Fold in the extra ingredients after riced.
What to Serve With
