Why this Recipe Works

Not only are these fudgy bites naturally sweetened with maple syrup, they also only take about 20 minutes to make. Furthermore, using a mini muffin pan helps keep the size smaller, which is a perfect size for a 78-calorie snack.

Healthier Fudgy Brownie Bites Ingredients

Fudgy Goodness

For that irresistible fudgy taste, 2 types of chocolate are required in this recipe: Chocolate Chips and Cocoa Powder.

Chocolate Chips or Bar

One of the most glorious ingredients in all the lands is chocolate! Firstly, use good quality chocolate in these bites. For example, Ghirardelli bittersweet or semi-sweet chocolate chips are top notch and melt beautifully.

The baking aisle of the grocery store typically also has chocolate bars meant for baking. These can also be used, just chop them up so it melts evenly. Or, if you have a modge podge of different chocolate chip remnants, then combine them all! As well as leftover chocolate bars from your kid’s Halloween stash.

Cocoa Powder

Unlike already made chocolate, cocoa powder contains no sugar. It’s a bitter dust that brings the fudgy punch to these brownie bites.

Cocoa powder is loaded with health benefits. According to the article “Health Benefits of Cocoa Powder”, at WebMD:

  • Improves cognitive health
  • Cocoa powder gives the immune system a boost
  • Lowers the risk of heart disease
  • Reduces inflammation

You don’t have to tell me twice to increase my cocoa powder intake. However, the article states to:

Go for products that contain 60-70% cocoa or higher to get the most benefits.

Fat

Obviously, brownies need a little bit of fat for that rich flavor. Below are a few healthy options to use in these fudgy brownie bites.

Avocado Oil

This oil has a mild taste and can be used later in sauteing veggies because of its high smoke point. Besides being multi-functional in preparing other foods, avocado oil has several health benefits.

According to article, “8 Evidence Based Health Benefits” by Hrefna Palsdottir, MS, avocado oil is rich in antioxidants, as well as…

It’s rich in oleic acid, polyunsaturated fats, carotenoids, and other antioxidant-rich nutrients that are linked to improved heart, skin, and eye health.

Coconut Oil

As apposed to avocado oil, coconut oil has a distinct taste. If you don’t like the coconut taste, then use a refined coconut oil.

There are some conflicting articles about coconut oil since it is high in saturated fat. There are several possible benefits of consuming coconut oil. However, according to this article, Top 10 Evidence-Based Health Benefits of Coconut Oil” it states that you should limit your intake of coconut oil due to the high amounts of saturated fat..

Butter

While butter should be enjoyed in moderation like coconut oil, it is a healthier option over vegetable or canola oil due to it being a whole food.

Flour

I like to use Whole Wheat flour when making these bites. Oat flour, Gluten-free flour, Almond flour, all work for this recipe as well.
